Hamaca paraguaya
Encina's reductionist approach is driven home in a 15-minute opening sequence, which is basically a fixed frame of an old man and woman emerging from the forest in long shot, stretching a hammock between two trees and sitting on it. Their nonstop bickering eventually reveals that the country is at war and they have not heard from their soldier son in a very long time. The mother seems resigned to his being dead; the father insists on keeping hope alive. Their waiting for something to happen becomes the viewer's cross to bear as well. Little else transpires in this short feature, which uses a bare minimum of sets and camera set-ups to underline the monotony and despair of the old couple's lives. Source: Young, Deborah.
Voladora
Voladora, a 10-minute documentary, shows how tensions arise in the community when women enter traditionally male spaces. One of the results of the first video workshop organized by the CAI, it was produced for a general audience and shown in film festivals and other forums, winning first place at the Fifth Festival of Indigenous Film in Morelia, Michoacán. As do most ethnobiographic documentaries, it focuses on the personal reality and culture of a marginal individual (Prelorán, 2006). It looks at the situation of a young Totonaca, Viviana Guerrero, who is struggling to achieve her dream of becoming part of the ancient ritual dance the Voladores (Flyers). It begins with the leader of Viviana’s dance group talking about having received the announcement prohibiting women from participating in this dance. Then, with the display of the title, the filmmaker introduces the documentary’s topic and the narrative conflict.
Susana Baca is not only a champion in the performance and preservation of Afro-Peruvian heritage, but also an elegant singer whose shimmering voice sings of love, loss and life. Susana and her husband Ricardo Pereira have founded the Instituto Negrocontinuo "Black Continuum" in Lima, a spirited facility for the exploration, expression, and creation of Black Peruvian culture. Nada
Bia (played by the rapper Clara Lima) is confronted with a question in school: what do you want to do after you finish high school? Her answer is strong enough to lend the film its title: nothing. The young rapper, therefore, more than fits David Bordwell’s description of the protagonist of the art film as a drifting character who lacks a clear goal; in fact, she enacts it: she desires nothing but the open-ended journey, the suspenseful ambiguity of the art film, the journey that is more important than its destination.
