The testimonies of Rigoberta Menchú, winner of the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize, widen the panorama of the abuses by the Guatemalan armed forces against her people and other indigenous communities who were forcibly removed from their land. The 1980 confrontation at the Spanish Embassy that took the lives of more than 30 people, including her father, highlighted the repression against civil society. The documentary was shown in the United States in 1983 and won the Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, but it did not premiere in Guatemala until twenty years later.
