    This course is a survey of Latin American cinema that spans from the 1930s to the present. Topics will include Mexican Golden Age cinema as well as the New Latin American Cinema of the 1960s and 1970s and contemporary new new waves. The course will examine key films in the history of Latin American cinema including María Candelaría (Emilio Fernandez, 1944), Memories of Underdevelopment (Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, Cuba,1968), and The Jackal of Nahueltoro (Miguel Littín, 1969) as well as accomplished contemporary productions such as Edifício Master (Eduardo Coutinho, 2002) and Neighboring Sounds (Kleber Mendonça Filho, 2012). The course will put these films in dialogue with key debates within Latin American cultural studies including debates around national culture, national identity, aesthetics and politics, and underdevelopment. In many cases, we will compare filmic treatments of these questions from different countries and from different time periods.

    Esta tragicomedia holandesa y argentina trata de una joven ingenua, Marcia (Tatiana Saphir), que aprende acerca de su sexualidad. Marcia es secuestrada por dos mujeres punky, Mao (Carla Crespo) y Lenin (Veronica Hassan). Ellas la llevan a una costa, la cual Marcia nunca había estado. Finalmente, las tres mujeres se familiarizan y terminan en la casa de una amiga de la abuela de Lenin, la tía Blanca (Beatriz Thibaudin).     Retomando algunos de los lineamientos con los que construyó Bonanza en el 2001, Rosell cuenta la cotidianeidad de una comunidad wichi. De la mano del etnógrafo, se adentra en la Salta profunda y, desde Tartagal, hace hablar a los wichis en su propia lengua. Pero también, como en el cuento de Borges, el etnógrafo americano “llega a soñar en un idioma que no es el de sus padres”. Así, Rosell pone en escena multiplicidad de lenguas –las maternas y las que se aprenden, las que nos son propias y las ajenas– para proponer que el lenguaje es lo que nos define y nos identifica. Este extranjero, antropólogo de profesión, llega para observar e investigar las prácticas sociales de una comunidad, se queda a vivir allí y se vuelve la voz cantante (hablando de voces) de la resistencia de los wichis por defender sus tierras, sus tradiciones; en definitiva, su identidad. La película trabaja sobre la grieta que genera el olvido en el que están sumidos estos pueblos y expone de un modo tenso y a la vez amable, uno de los modos en el que las tradiciones se instalan conflictivamente en el cuerpo social.
