Malú is from an upper-class family and her single mother doesn't want her to play with Jorgito, who she looks down on because of his lower-class background. Jorgito's mother, a poor socialist proud of her family's social standing, places similar restrictions on her son. What neither woman recognizes is the immense strength of the bond between Malú and Jorgito. When the children learn that Malú's mother is planning to leave Cuba, they decide to run away and travel to the other side of the island to find Malú's father and persuade him against signing the forms that would allow it. Viva Cuba es la historia de la fortaleza de una amistad entre dos niños que pertenecen a clases sociales muy diferentes. Malú es la hija de una madre soltera de clase alta y Jorgito vive en un entorno socialista y humilde. Las familias de ambos les prohíben verse y cuando la madre de Malú pretenden dejar Cuba, los dos niños se escapan de casa y viajan por todo el país para evitar que sus familias rompan su amistad.
