Black God, White Devil... offers a meandering portrait of Manoel, an impoverished cowhand, who kills his boss during a confrontation about wages and takes up with a group of pilgrims devoted to Sebastian, an apocalyptic saint. With a haunting combination of violence and piety, Sebastian prophecies a millenial paradise visited by golden rain where "the land turns to sea and the sea to land" and where the beatitudes are realized as the "rich become poor and the poor become rich," a carnivalesque glimpse of the world upside down in which power structures are upended in order to literalize the promises extended in the Sermon on the Mount. But Sebastian's messages are always colored by the threat of violence and upon witnessing an infant sacrifice staged by Sebastian and her husband, Manoel's wife Rosa kills Sebastian just as António dos Mortes, an assassin hired by the Catholic Church, kills all his followers. Unmoored and adrift, Manoel falls in with Captain Corisco, a brutal, roaming revolutionary, and follows him on a series of raids. He trades the fantastically posed idealism of the saint for the fantastic violence of the revolutionary. After António returns to kill Corisco, Manoel flees again, this time to the seashore and, we witness the fulfillment of prophesy, as the sea and land bleed together. Source: Child, Benjamin. Black God, White Devil... ofrece una perspectiva de Manoel, un vaquero pobre, quien mata a su jefe por su salario y se une a un grupo de peregrinos devotos a Sebastian, un santo apocalíptico.
