Latin American Cinema: 1930 to the Present
This course is a survey of Latin American cinema that spans from the 1930s to the present. Topics will include Mexican Golden Age cinema as well as the New Latin American Cinema of the 1960s and 1970s and contemporary new new waves. The course will examine key films in the history of Latin American cinema including María Candelaría (Emilio Fernandez, 1944), Memories of Underdevelopment (Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, Cuba,1968), and The Jackal of Nahueltoro (Miguel Littín, 1969) as well as accomplished contemporary productions such as Edifício Master (Eduardo Coutinho, 2002) and Neighboring Sounds (Kleber Mendonça Filho, 2012). The course will put these films in dialogue with key debates within Latin American cultural studies including debates around national culture, national identity, aesthetics and politics, and underdevelopment. In many cases, we will compare filmic treatments of these questions from different countries and from different time periods. -
Latin American Documentary
This course will investigate Latin American documentary by focusing on three important topics in Latin American cultural studies. We will screen recent and historical documentaries about (1) underdevelopment and poverty, (2) the history and memory of the Southern Cone military dictatorships, and (3) popular culture and folklore. These three topics will provide material for an investigation of documentary form. With respect to each topic, we will consider how the resources of documentary filmmaking are employed to frame the same subject matter in different ways. -

The site is an attempt to research, gather, organize, and disseminate information about the relationship between Latin American literature and film. The literary side of this pairing has directed the project: the archive aims to identify works by Latin American authors whose novels, short stories, drama, poetry, and other writings have served as the point of departure for the production of feature films, documentaries, shorts, and films for television produced inside and outside Latin America. In addition, information about film scripts written by Latin American authors--both original scripts and scripts based on Latin American literature--has been incorporated into the archive. -

Spanish Film Club
Spanish Film Club (SFC), an initiative by PRAGDA, offers grants twice a year to help high schools and universities bring the very best in contemporary Spanish and Latin American cinema to campuses with the aim of introducing students to the language and cultures of these territories. More than 100 schools have participated in the program so far. The inventive model allows schools to select a minimum of five films from a catalogue to create a film festival on campus. A committee of experts in Ibero American cinema has made an eclectic and diverse selection of films featuring first-time filmmakers and established masters alike. All films feature English subtitles. Representing 19 countries, new films are added every year. Spanish Film Club also encourages the organization of virtual Q&As with filmmakers and provides all the necessary material for the festival’s promotion. The project’s ultimate goal is to introduce students and a generally broader audience to the cultures of Ibero American countries and to create a stable exhibition platform of the latest Spanish and Portuguese language cinema. -

Em 1962, o líder da liga Camponesa de Sapé (PB), João Pedro Teixeira, é assassinado por ordem de latifundiários. Um filme sobre sua vida começa a ser rodado em 1964, com a reconstituição ficcional da ação política que levou ao assassinato, e com a produção do CPC da UNE e do Movimento de Cultura Popular de Pernambuco, e direção de Eduardo Coutinho. As filmagens com a participação de camponeses do Engenho Galiléia (PE) e da viúva de João Pedro, Elizabeth Teixeira, são interrompidas pelo Golpe Militar em 1964. Dezessete anos depois, em 1981, Eduardo Coutinho retoma o projeto e procura Elizabeth Teixeira e outros participantes do filme interrompido, como o camponês João Virgílio, também atuante em ligas. O tema central passa a ser a história de cada um deles que, estimulados pela filmagem e revendo as imagens do passado, elaboram para a câmera os sentidos de suas experiências. João Virgílio conta a tortura e a prisão que sofreu neste período. Enquanto Elizabeth, que havia mudado de nome e vivia refugiada numa pequena cidade da Bahia com apenas um de seus dez filhos, emerge da clandestinidade e reassume sua identidade.
