Description / Descripción
(NativeAmericanFilms.org)
Indians working at a hacienda in Chimborazo revolt against the sadistic foreman and set the place on fire while the owner, rancher Juan Domingo Orosco, is away with his son. When they return they find the place ruined and the mother and newborn daughter dead. Struck with grief, Orosco repents and becomes a monk at the missionary that works with the Indians east of the mountain peaks. When his son Carlos grows up, he falls in love with a young Jívaro woman named Cumandá (Sandy Puebla) from the other side of the mountains, in the deep jungle. Cumandá saves Carlos's life in several situations, but when she violes a sacred festival, the only way she can escape the death punishment for herself and Carlos is to marry Yahuarmaqui, the Black Hand, chief of all the tribes (played by Armando Yepez). Cumandá is based on the 1879 book by Juan León Mera, which is considered Ecuador's first novel. Mera's sentimental romance is hopelessly old-fashioned, and the film only marginally improves on the racist sentiments of that era. (NativeAmericanFilms.org)
