Juan cruza as favelas de sua cidade na Guatemala até um lixão, onde vai buscar seu amigo, o catador Samuel; enquanto isso, Sara corta os cabelos e enfaixa os seios para poder se passar por menino--uma providência que, como se verá algum tempo depois, é absolutamente necessária, embora talvez não suficiente. Juntos, os três começam uma longuíssima viagem, primeiro de barco e depois atravessando o México no topo de trens de carga, em busca de uma chance de atravessar ilegalmente a fronteira dos Estados Unidos. Em dado momento, junta-se a eles o índio guatemalteco Chauk, um garoto que não fala uma palavra de espanhol e é tão pobre quanto o trio. mas, ainda assim, é rejeitado por Juan, que se acredita o líder do grupo e, sobretudo, é ciumento de Sara. Desse atrito surgirão algumas das desventuras que eles enfrentarão; outras são simplesmente fruto do acaso--em especial daqueles acasos que costumam acometer os desprotegidos e miseráveis. O filme do diretor espanhol Diego QuemadaDíez, porém, nada tem de novelão: é, ao contrário, seco, econõmico e intransigente no retrato que faz de uma falta de perspectiva tão extrema que desafiaria a imaginação. Juan crosses the slums of his city in Guatemala to a dump, where he picks up his friend, the scavenger Samuel; meanwhile, Sara cuts her hair and bandages her breasts in order to pass for a boy - a step which, as will be seen some time later, is absolutely necessary, although perhaps not enough. Together, the three begin a long journey, first by boat and then across Mexico on top of freight trains, looking for a chance to cross to the United States illegally. At one point, they are joined by the Guatemalan Indian Chauk, a boy who does not speak a word of Spanish and is as poor as the trio. But still, he is rejected by Juan, who believes himself to be the leader of the group and, above all, is jealous of Sara. From this friction, some of the misfortunes they will face arise; others are simply the result of chance - especially accidents that usually affect the unprotected and poor. The film by Spanish director Diego Quemada Díez, however, is far from messy: it is, on the contrary, dry, economical, and uncompromising in its portrayal, making a lack of perspective so extreme that it defies the imagination.
