Mariana y sus dos pequeños hijos (Gabriel y Andrea) llegan a Nueva York para reunirse con Antonio (respectivamente, su esposo y padre), quien había emigrado anteriormente a Estados Unidos. Este reencuentro genera tensiones entre la pareja y Andrés anuncia a Mariana que se marcha solo a Miami para realizar un trabajo, pero que pronto se volverán a reunir allí. Mariana se queda en el pequeño apartamento de Jackson Hights (Queens) con sus dos hijos y, conforme el tiempo pasa y no consigue contactar con Antonio, va dándose cuenta de que éste les ha abandonado definitivamente. Sin trabajo, sin saber inglés y sin un colchón económico, la vida de Mariana y sus hijos cada vez se vuelve más complicada. Mariana no consigue vender las empanadas que cocina y para sobrevivir comienza a recoger de las basuras latas de refrescos que luego revende. Durante su primer verano en Nueva York, sus hijos la acompañan en estas duras tareas y viven en primera persona todos los problemas que se les van planteando (son desalojados del apartamento por falta de pago, tienen dificultades para encontrar un nuevo alojamiento ya que no pueden abonarlo por adelantado, pasan varias noches a la intemperie, etc.). Mariana (Paola Mendoza) is the definition of determination because she fights through various adverse situations to keep her family together. In reference to her children, Gabriel (Sebastian Villada Lopez), 10, and Andrea (Laura Montana Cortez), 6, have grown up in the country and culture of Colombia without their father. He took a voluntary migration trip to the United States years earlier in order establish a foundation for a better life for his family. Finally after dealing with separation for many years the family is reunited in New York City.After coming home from a late check in from work, Antonio announces he has a job and will be relocating to Miami…alone. He will send for the family when he is well settled. Over a long period of time Mariana does not suffice any word from him. Worried and in desperateness, she goes to her only friend’s home to find out Antonio is not coming back. The rental lease agreement is due, there is no food on the table and Mariana has fifty dollars to her name. Mariana must deal with issues such as being in a strange city, barely knowing how to speak fluent English, no family support, and the need of emergency financial help. With empanada dough recipes focused on how to make empanadas, Mariana creates beef empanadas to sell on the streets. However, this idea quickly fails. With all options closing in on her, Mariana turns to recycling cans for money. Mariana uses recycle containers to recycle for cash in order to put food on the table. With Mariana’s two children, Gabriel and Andrea, working beside her as a co-worker colleague, the family finds the most stable structures of love and finance they have known since their arrival. It is during these challenging moments that the family triumphs. In Entre Nos, Mariana, Gabriel and Andrea are symbols of hope for the American dream. They take us on a remarkable journey where we bear witness to family commitments in love to survive. (IndiePix Productions)
