In 1535, an alchemist builds an extraordinary mechanism encapsulated in a small golden device. The invention, designed to give eternal life to its owner, survives its maker until 1997, when it is discovered by an antique dealer named Jesus Gris. Fascinated, Gris does not realize that more than one person is looking for the strange mechanism. The promise of eternal life has become an obsession for the old and sick Dieter de la Guardia.
