El lugar sin límites (1978), directed by Arturo Ripstein, is a film about a male transvestite who owns a brothel in a sleepy town in rural Mexico. The protagonist, La Manuela, refuses to sell it to the local cacique (strongman) much to the disappointment of his daughter who wants to move elsewhere to work. The film chronicles the return of Pancho, a hot-headed individual who desires La Manuela. As the plot unravels we are able to see a clash of personalities, power relations and gender dynamics. In the film La Manuela and Pancho represent to opposites that attract. Pancho is an indebted, hot-headed truck driver that is down and out. He is a virile and strong man overcome by desire and obsessed with control over women and men. In short he is the stereotypical macho. La Manuela is also a strong character, a desirable and confident feminine transvestite. Her transvestism threatens the machismo represented by Pancho. El lugar sin límites (1978), dirigida por Arturo Ripstein, es una película sobre un travesti quien es dueño de un burdel en un pueblo somnoliento en una zona rural de México. La protagonista, La Manuela, se niega a vender el negocio al cacique local para la decepción de su hija quien quiere mudarse a otro lugar para trabajar. La película documenta el regreso de Pancho, un hombre impulsivo que desea a La Manuela. A medida que la trama se desenmaraña vemos choques de personalidad, relaciones de poder y dinámicas de género. La Manuela y Pancho representan dos opuestos que se atraen entre sí. Pancho es un conductor de camión endeudado y desposeído que se enoja facilmente. Es un hombre viril y fuerte, abrumado por el deseo y obsesionado por controlar a las mujeres y a los hombres. En resumen, es el macho estereotípico. La Manuela es un personaje fuerte también, un travesti femenina deseable y segura de sí misma. Su travestismo amenaza el machismo representado por Pancho.
