The main topic of the film is a disciplinary scandal that ocurred during a soccer game between Guayaquil's Barcelona team and the University League of Quito, which ended in the one-year suspension of the league's veteran player, who was just coming off an excellent performance with the Ecuadorian national team in Germany's 2006 World Cup. Through interviews with family members, leaders, and journalists, as well as several recreations and some fictionalizations, Muñoz tells the story of the player from Chota, a region whose population has a high percentage of Black people. The film ultimately concludes that the success of the primarily Afro-Ecuadorian team in the World Cup only served to briefly cover up the history of racism in Ecuador, and that the subsequent incident with Delgado brought the issue of racism back to the forefront, through the impertinent and excessive punishment imposed on the player. The title "Red Card" plays with two forms of expulsion: social/racial, as well as the meaning used in soccer. The film explores a theme that has been repeated in various countries across the continent and the world: the complex process of identification and potential frustration with sports idols.
